ATP World Tour Finals 2014

ATP World Tour Finals 2014 were once again played at the O2 in London. Which saw the very best from the world of professional tennis battle it out for one of the most coveted awards of the tour.

The annual return to the O2 and as a Sports Photographer I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I started out with Marin Cilic against world number 1 Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic started out as he meant to go on winning in straight sets.

I then had Djokvic again this time against Stanislas Wawrinka. A game I was looking forward to and expected a drawn out affair. However, Djokovic had other ideas and beat Wawrinka in straight sets. It was starting to look like nobody could get anywhere close to Djokovic.

My next game was in the other group and was a real crowd puller. GB’s own Andy Murray playing the ever popular Roger Federer. Federer had already qualified for the knockout stages. What followed was difficult to watch if you were a Murray fan as Federer systematically destroyed Murray in straight sets. Infact Murray only took one game all match! From where I was sitting it looked like Federer gifted him that as well!

For Andy Murray it must have been lonely sat in the break being 1 set down not having won a single game

Unfortunately the showdown between the world number 1 Djokovic and Number 2 Federer never happened as unusually Federer pulled out of the final moments before it was to start due to a back injury.

Which left Djokovic the winner of the 2014 ATP Tour Finals with hitting a ball in the final.

Tour of Britain 2014 – Stage 8 London

Tour of Britain 2014 – Stage 8 London. Everything you would ever want in a cycling event Time Trial, Racing and the final champion decided on the line!

The final stage of Tour of Britain 2014 – Stage 8 London. Split into two parts the first an 8km time trial. Riders would set off at regular 1 minute intervals, if they missed it they couldn’t start. The top 10, the last to set off have a 2 minute stagger. All eyes were of course on the British and Olympic Time Trial champion Sir Bradely Wiggins. Was there any doubt that as he romped home a full 8 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Tour of Britain 2014

Team Sky’s Sir Bradely Wiggins at the start of the Time Trial. On his way to a emphatic victory.

I’d just like to  say that Sir ‘Wiggo’ is quite possibly the coolest person in existence, my belief has been furthered enhanced when I saw his support car. Yes it is a Jaguar F-Type R! and the plate is pretty spot on as well.

Time Trial is a weird thing compared to racing. There’s no tactics other than going out fully focused and pushing your physical limits to the extreme.

Tour of Britain 2014

BMC racings Dylan Teuns from Belgium totally focused at the start of his time trial.

The final part was a 10 lap race over the same course as the time trial so not really a lot of change. There wasn’t a climb and only just about the chance for the final Yodel Sprint category. The surprise Garmin Sharp’s Dylan Van Baarle  started with the yellow jersey on his back.

Hurricane Burtha Blows Through

Hurricane Burtha hit the UK over the weekend of 10th August 2014

Hurricane Burtha hit the UK and I was working. The call went out from the picture desk to get ‘Weather’ pictures. Great was my first thought, here we go again!

I happened to be covering the Ashford and Folkestone area for KMG so headed towards the coast to see what was happening and was would make a good frame. I must admit what I found was a little surprising to me. Surfing in Folkestone! (apparently not that unusual by all accounts) At this point I feel I ought to point out that I am from Devon originally and spent a fair amount of my formative years surfing on the North coast. Moreover I have never turned my lens towards surfing and I felt it worthy as a nice spin on what would undoubtedly be a plethora of flood and downed tree images. We will see when the papers hit the shops if my alternative ‘spin’ idea was picked up on or not.

I really enjoyed it for the brief time I was actually shooting for. If you want to see how it should be done however you need to check out the work of Alex Williams who has been traveling the world for the last 20 plus years capturing stunning surfing imagary.

In closing here’s my favorite. I wonder what was going through his mind right at this moment!

Dover Athletic – New Challenges

Dover Athletic – A new season, a  new promotion and new challenges, but the heart of a local football club is unchanged and has never been stronger.

So Dover Athletic have earned promotion to the Conference after what can only be described as a roller coaster 2013 – 2014 campaign.

So with the new season looming, and lets face it there’s no real interest in the World Cup anymore! A lot of eyes are starting to turn to the new season.  I consciously spent a year away from shooting the premiership last year and it occurred to me that I spent a fair amount of time last season on the touchline at Crabble covering The Whites for the KMG group. The last club I covered as many home games for  in a season was Chelsea! and I have to admit I enjoyed shooting at Crabble more!

So as a small retrospective here are a few of my personal favorites form the games I covered:

First up was Dorcester in October, with a 1-0 win.

Dover Atheltic

Ricky Modest on the attack

Theres nothing like a good FA cup tie and Dover most definitely had one of those against Oxford City. Without a doubt the goal of the season for me was the cool headed back heal of young Sean Raggett to make it 3 – 0.

Dover Atheltic

Dover v Oxford City in FA Cup. Sean Raggett back heels the third goal!

The 2 – 0 win over Leamington in the FA trophy was next for me. Its  hard to take pictures when half the flood lights fail in the second half but I did my best!

Dover Atheletic

Nathan Elder (9) brought down in the Leamington box and gain a free kick that lead to the second goal. Dover v Leamington in the FA Trophy.

After a string of away games early in the year and many, many wet days the first game  I was at was Gosport in March and a 3 – 0 win!

Dover Atheletic

My next was the 1 – 1 draw against Basingstoke

Dover Atheletic

Liam Bellamy (7) shakes off a tackle. Dover Athletic FC, Crabble, CT17 0JB. Dover v Basingstoke in the Skrill South

As the title race started to hot up a 1 – 0 against Stains at home:

Dover Atheletic

Moses Ademola (10) makes a surge forward

And so to the last league home game of the season against bottom of the table Whitehawk, safe to say not the shining moment of the season as it ran out 1 – 1, but there were a few highlights:

Tom Murphy (11). Dover v Whitehawk in the Skrill South.

Tom Murphy (11). Dover v Whitehawk in the Skrill South.

So that was was I did for the season 2013 – 2014. I wont go into the comings and going and whats good and whats bad for that head to Dovers website, its very good and full of information. Hopefully I’ll be back for the new season…. so watch this space

Tour Series – British Team Cycling Action

Tour Series – The Pearl Izumi Tour Series. 10 rounds of close and fast cycling in the center of British cities and free to watch. If you like cycling its awesome, if you don’t its something you will never forget!

Tour Series. As a sports photographer I personally love covering road cycling. I have covered The Tour of Britain before and countless regional events but never The Tour Series. this year I was down to cover Round 8 in Canary Wharf and Round 9 in Woking. All the circuits are tight and most importantly short 1km – 1.5km respectively.

I picked up with the action at Round eight at Canary Wharf. The course is basically a loop within one of the most famous financial areas in the world. Whats not to like?

The race lasts for an hour plus 5 laps.

From Canary Wharf the Tour Series moved to Woking for round 9, where the final round of the Matrix Fitness GP was to reach its thrilling climax. Where Scottish cyclist Eileen Roe would clinch not only the round but the whole series title.

2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup

2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup held at Lee Valley White Water Centre. Purpose built for the 2012 London Olympics and its still a world class venue.

2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup was held over 6th, 7th and 8th of June 2014. I was there for the final day to cover the womans K1 kayak finals and the men’s C2 canoe doubles.

2014 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup.

Canoeing is such a dynamic sport to cover. Where you can get close to the action even as a spectator. So its all about capturing the athletes expressions and the action. Just what I like!

Canon 8-15mm – A New Perspective

Canon 8-15mm – A New Perspective. So I have had a 8-15 in my box for a bit here’s what I thought about it.

Canon 8-15mm has been one of the lenses I have been considering for a while. I can already cover everything from 24mm all the way up to 600mm. I know I need something wider than 24mm but which one?

I had thought the 16-32 f2.8 was a good option. Mainly for the low light capabilities. But then again that is only a measly 8mm extra and loads of over lap. So that left the Canon 8-15mm L but was kit too wide. A kind of joke lens you would use a couple of times a year? So the only option was to test drive one.

The good folks at Lenses For Hire had one and at a reasonable price. So I made sure that I had enough variation of  Press assignments to give it a true test.  I thought the Chelsea Flower Show and the first time the FIA World Rallycross Championship came to England would be a fair test.

So here are a few frames from the Media Day at Chelsea Flower Show.

I quickly started to really enjoy using the lens and the new angles it allowed for. One thing that is a bit daunting is how close to your subject you can get. The following picture I was so close I very nearly knocked the guy over!.

Canon 8-15mm - A New Perspective

RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Press Day 19th May 2014, Chelsea London.

And so onto the FIA World Rallycross at Lydden Hill. Now motorsport isn’t normally associated with ultra wide angle glass but I wanted see what it would do in the paddock as well as trackside.

Its ideal to simply ‘get everything in’ in alot of environments. There seems to be a growing trend on landscape type action shots and its damn perfect for that kind of thing.

Canon 8-15mm - A New Perspective

As I got more used to it its great to use it to get get otherwise unachievable scene setting images. But you have to be careful on the framing

To see a quick summery and for other links have a look on my other site www.rubberduckdoes.com.

In conclusion

Its great lens which I will be adding to my arsenal soon. Its not for everyone as some of the frames you get are a little ‘freaky’ but it adds a new look that will compliment the way I work. On a Full Frame sensors results will be interesting for sure and at 8mm you’ll be cropping shots with your toes in!. Its also not cheap so out of reach for most. Performancewise I was worried by the low light capabilities as its only F4. I didn’t need to as it handled every situation I used it in with no problem. So for me it ticks all the boxes.

Panoramic Photography – The wider view

Panoramic photography if I’m honest it is my secret pleasure!

Panoramic photography never used to be something I paid any attention though. I always thought that panoramic photography was far too fiddly and time consuming. Add to that that the thought of needing specialist kit like tripods and heads it was something I was pretty keen to avoid!

But, and here it is, its a lesson in not believing everything you read! You don’t need all that stuff, unless of course its your bread and butter and you can justify spending the ££’s then that’s fine. But I’m a press and PR photographer and I cant so I have to make do with what I have and my available subject matter. I increasingly find myself out on an assignment shooting a set of frames specifically thinking about a panoramic.

I mean a good panoramic is  just nice to look at, isn’t it?

Week 25 - Dunstanburgh Castle Northumberland

Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland

There just something about the above image that to me is just ‘nice’ and I suppose that’s why I like Panoramic Photography. Some people will say ‘but hey, you can get that effect from a nice frame with a  wide angle lens’ and yes you can but you venture into the realms of distortion and absurdly shaped people. However a word to the wise, you can go over board with a panoramic especially if you shoot wide. Below is a great shot which would have been better shooting a little less wide so the balloons are, well round looking!!

World record balloon channel crossing attempt

However sometimes that just the effect your looking for.

GB Mens Basketball V Peurto Rico, Copper Box Arena. August 2013

GB Mens Basketball V Peurto Rico, Copper Box Arena. August 2013

So here’s how I do it. I always, always shoot upright. Otherwise you’ll end up with such a narrow and wide final image it will be painful to look at it! I find at least 6 frames make for a decent final image. Make sure you keep the exposure even (I’m not going to tell you how to expose a picture) and have a landscape appropriate aperture. Then in post I use PS to stitch it all together. I think its important to have a point of focus, for example:

Richborough Towers, Sandwich, Kent

Richborough Towers the day before they were demolished.

There is also a technique called the Brenizer Method developed by american wedding tog Ryan Brenizer. I think its a missed panoramic technique as you shoot in the same way the only difference is that you use a shallow DOF and shoot more of a grid but the wide effect with a point of focus is still the final target. Yes Ryan has developed it as a portrait thing as you end up with a such a super small DOF but there are a lot of similarities, and the possibilities are endless!

Brenizer Method

Brenizer Method – Just a different way to shoot a panoramic

In ten years the only panoramic I can remember being published is this one I shot and added as an afterthought for the KM group an assignment on the National Trust property South Foreland Lighthouse and made a very nice 2 page spread in the paper a couple of weeks ago.

EM FORELAND 210414

If you perfect the technique it is possible to get a group of people into one, which believe me isn’t as easy as it sounds

Rosneil20131013-1097-Edit

Anyway that’s enough of my guilty photographic pleasure. I think every photographer both amateur and professional alike ought to have one and now mine is out in the open. Have a go. I’d like to to see the results you might get.

So in finishing here’s a few more of my favorites:

Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014

Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014 ran between 24th and 28th March.

I was lucky enough to get the nod to go and cover Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014 this year. Not normally a sporting venue and as far as I am aware. This is the only one held at East Wintergardens.

Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014

East Wintergardens Canary Wharf a great Venue

I must admit covering squash was a sports photography first for me. I spent most of the week sat behind the glass back wall having supremely fit athletes smash a little white ball at me. It makes a kind of ping sound as well.

canary wharf squash classic 2014

Adrian Waller returning to James Willstrop. Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014. PSA World Tour Head to Head 1st Round.

All week long I was absolutely fine. As long as I was looking though the camera! The very moment I moved the camera away from my eye. I flinched at every stroke!

canary wharf squash classic 2014

James Willstrop (ENG) PSA ranked 5th in the world. Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014.

But enough of my moaning! Just to be able to watch these guys was awesome. their level of fitness was quite unbelievable.

Here are a selection from the rounds and the Quarter finals:

I only covered one half of the rounds then the other sides Quarter Finals and then the final. For me the decision was easy as the market is very small and niche so flooding the market with a load of similar images in my opinion was complete over kill.

The actual shooting was very strange. The only sport shot as wide as possible! as they are so damn close! I think I shot less than 50 frames on my 70-200 all week!

The final was an all English affair against PSA World number 1 Nick Matthew and James Willstrop. PSA World ranked number 5.

Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014

Canary Wharf Squash Classic 2014

Nick Matthew (ENG) PSA World number 1 v James Willstrop (ENG) PSA ranked 5th in the world. 2014 Canary Wharf Classic.

The final was straight sets, but didn’t reflect the game. Yes Nick was playing the squash of his life. However, James also had moments of what can only be described as brilliance notably this behind the back return. But the very fact he had to play it signaled the control that Nick had over the game.

Kent Freelance Photographer – February

Kent Freelance Photographer – February may be the shortest month but there’s always loads to be doing and planning for the year ahead.

Kent Freelance Photographer. Well February came and went. As usual blink and you’ll miss it! As the country slowly started to recover from the worst winter storms in living memory. I was busy planning what I am going to cover this year. Not easy as so much stuff clashes!

Due to the weather I found myself in the studio shooting looking at some product work. I was finally starting to have a play with TriggerTrap which is an amazing phone app and little box of tricks that you can use to trigger your camera in a load of interesting ways in a very accurate way.

High Speed Photography – Falling Dice

Something I have meaning to do for ages is to start to shoot some Kent Landscapes again when I get the time. On the way back from some press work I stopped at Kingdown Beach and shot a few frames. Needless to say this image is not what the camera actually captured. It is a technique (which if I get enough interest I’ll put a little ‘How To’ up) Its not HDR by the way.

Rallycross Test Day 22nd February

I don’t think I have so eagerly awaited a rallycross season to get underway. The much publicized World Rallycross Championship will undoubtedly change the sport for the better. I will be avidly following it whether I am covering it as a photographer or watching it as a fan. Especially as Jacques Villeneuve will be racing in it this year. He was at Lydden testing in his Albatec Supercar and was blindingly fast.

If you want to see more picture of Jacques take a look on my automotive website www.rubberduckdoes.com where I have put some.

I have also been busy with press work. Covering as usual a varied selection of events throughout Kent. GEEK 2014 Expo was a challenge as it was held in the Winter Gardens in Margate, with all the lights off! So a little lateral thinking was in order as I didn’t want to blast my pictures with flash and loose the atmosphere.
